  17. 1)   Installation
  18.  
  19.      Wdcrak will install itself.  Just insert
  20. the diskette in the a: or the b: drive and type
  21. A:setup or b:setup as appropriate.  Wdcrak will
  22. not alter your autoexec.bat or your config.sys
  23. files.  No .ini files are created nor are any
  24. .ini files altered.
  25.  
  26.      Wdcrak does add some files to your
  27. windows/system directory however.  These are
  28. Visual Basic runtime files needed by the
  29. program.  They are vbrun300.dll and others.
  30.  
  31.               Be sure to install Wdcrak only in the
  32.                     following directory:
  33.  
  34.                          C:\wdcrak.
  35.  
  36. 2)   Use License
  37.  
  38.      You are authorized to use Wdcrak on one
  39. computer at a time.  You may not install Wdcrak
  40. on a network or on multiple computers so that
  41. more than on user could use Wdcrak on more than
  42. one computer at a time.  Site licenses are
  43. available for a fee. Contact CRAK Software for
  44. details.

  46.      You may make copies of WDcrak and
  47. distributes them to others provided that you do
  48. not reveal the security code necessary to access
  49. the full features of the program.  You must,
  50. however, distribute the software in its entirety
  51. including these instructions (minus the security
  52. code).

  54. 3)   Opening Display
  55.  
  56.      Click on the Wdcrak icon and start the
  57. application just as you would any other
  58. Windows application.
  59.  
  60.      If you have purchased the full capability
  61. version of Wdcrak, you may enter
  62. the security code to enable Wdcrak.  Be sure to
  63. follow the instructions given with the security
  64. code exactly, using the proper letter case as
  65. described.
  66.  
  67.      If you do not know the security code,
  68. Wdcrak will only reveal passwords of exactly ten
  69. characters.  Simply click on the "Don't Know"
  70. option button to start the program.

  72. 4)   Selecting a File
  73.  
  74.      Wdcrak uses standard Windows dialog boxes
  75. to allow you to examine and select any file on
  76. any disk in you system.  Select the appropriate
  77. disk, then the proper directory, and then click
  78. or double click on the file you want to crack.

  82. 5)   Exiting Wdcrak
  83.  
  84.      Wdcrak may be exited at any time simply by
  85. clicking on the "Exit" button in the
  86. lower right portion of the display.
  87.  
  88. 6)   Wait for Processing
  89.  
  90.      Unfortunately, Wdcrak must do an enormous
  91. amount of processing to collect file statistics
  92. and determine the encryption key used.  Please
  93. be patient.  The Horizontal scroll bar at the
  94. bottom of the Wdcrak window will continue to
  95. slide back and forth as processing continues.

  97. 7)   Check the Decode Grid
  98.  
  99.                    *****VERY IMPORTANT*****
  100.  
  101.      It is vital that you check the text
  102. appearing in the decode grid when the program
  103. pauses and puts up a message box. . Usually
  104. there is absolutely no need for correction and
  105. the user may then simply click on the "Find
  106. Password" button the get the password.
  107. Sometimes Wdcrak cannot exactly determine the
  108. decode key on the first pass and needs your
  109. help.  Click on the "OK" button first and then
  110. use the vertical scroll bar at the right to
  111. examine the decoded text.
  112.  
  113.      If there are obvious errors such as Capital
  114. letters where none belong, or there
  115. are nonsense characters in certain positions,
  116. simply use the mouse to click on the cell that
  117. is wrong and type the letter you think should be
  118. there. Remember, use the proper case.
  119.  
  120.      Notice that when you type in a new
  121. character, all the characters in that column of
  122. text also change to other characters (not what
  123. you typed).  If all the characters in the column
  124. you have changed look correct, then go on and
  125. correct the next column.  It is kind of like
  126. solving a big crossword puzzle only very much
  127. easier because the vertical scroll bar allows
  128. you to see so much text and the text becomes
  129. more and more readable and obvious as each
  130. correction is made.
  131.  
  132.      Sometimes all of the text in a particular
  133. column looks correct except for one nonsense
  134. character.  This is probably a formatting
  135. character (Tab etc.).
  136.

  139.       if the rest if the characters in the same column
  140.                      seem to be correct.
  141.  
  142.      In the case where the grid comes up
  143. completely blank, there is no need for
  144. corrections.  The program has found a section of
  145. pure key which it likes to turn into spaces.
  146. The rest of the text may be garbage but it
  147. doesn't matter.  Click in the "Find Password"
  148. button and the password will magically appear!

  151. 8)   Click On the "Find Password" Button
  152.  
  153. Ta Da!!!  The password will appear.

  162. 9)   Extended Features
  163.  
  164. If you are trying to recover a password from a
  165. file which is heavily formatted, uses a wide
  166. selection of fonts, or has a lot of embedded
  167. graphics WDcrak  may not find the start of text
  168. (which it needs) properly.  In this case grab
  169. the vertical scroll bar and slide it down a
  170. little bit, then click on "Find Password".  Keep
  171. repeating this procedure and monitor the "Text
  172. Quality"  number displayed just below the
  173. vertical scroll bar.  Generally, the lower this
  174. number the better.  If the "Text Quality" number
  175. is less than about 85, you will be able to
  176. reconstruct the displayed text enough to finally
  177. recover the password by clicking on the "Find
  178. Password" key.
  179.  
  180. Wdcrak searches for key in the area of text
  181. starting with the seven lines displayed on the
  182. grid.  By sliding the vertical scroll bar you
  183. can pick the area of the file you wish to
  184. search.  The search length is determined by the
  185. value you set in the "Search Length" box.
  186. Values of search length between about 25 and 200
  187. are optimum, but certain very long files may
  188. require longer (and more time consuming)
  189. searches.

  191.                         Important...
  192.         Be sure to correct the grid text before each
  193.          click on the "Find Password" key after the
  194.                search length has been altered.

  197. 10)  Limitations
  198.  
  199.      Wdcrak requires standard English text for
  200. proper decoding of files.  If the file is
  201. not more or less standard English or have the
  202. frequency distribution characteristics of
  203. standard English,  Wdcrak may fail miserably.
  204. The password recovery algorithm is surprisingly
  205. robust however, so go ahead and click on the
  206. "Find Password" key.  The password recovered may
  207. still be correct!

  209.      We are sorry if the program fails...there
  210. are no guarantees or warrantees of any kind
  211. either expressed or implied for Wdcrak.  Use the
  212. program at your own risk...it may fail to find
  213. your password.
